The mobile network operator, Zain on Monday resumed its operations in Akobo County of Jonglei State after shutdown due to the civil war.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, several residents of Akobo said they are now able to connect to their loved ones after nearly seven years.

“After the outbreak of the 2013 conflict, we lost contacts with relatives in Juba and other places. But now we are happy it has resumed. I got connected to those with whom I had separated,” said Sarah Chol.

She urged the company to expand its coverage outside Akobo town.

Peter Tut, another resident, said they have been celebrating the resumption of the mobile network in the area since Monday.

“With the network, we feel peace has been extended to us in Akobo. Let all South Sudanese unite and embrace peace,” said.

Chuol Nyang, the Secretary-General of the defunct Akobo State, said the network resumption is a dividend of the 2018 peace deal.

“This network covers an area of about 25 kilometres within Akobo town. Now that it has resumed operations since it stopped in January 2014, there will be no room for negative propaganda,” he said.

Nyang said the network will enhance service delivery to residents.
