Authorities in South Sudan’s Yei River State have introduced new number plates for all government vehicles and motorcycles following an approval by the state legislative assembly.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Yei River State Police Commissioner Major General Yoasa Lujang Kamba says the introduction of the new government registration plates is aimed at easing identification and tracking of all state movable assets.

Lujang said the new number plates marked yellow and bearing the South Sudan code (SSD) will be issued to all government vehicles and motorcycles starting from the office of the governor to the county governments.

“All government cars not bearing SSD will now get new government number plates. We have started giving to the cars of the governor, the deputy governor, the speaker, and almost all the government cars are now bearing new state number plates,” he said.

He said all private cars and motorcycles should bear the SSD number plate, warning anyone violating the traffic directives and regulations will face tough action and legal charges.

A government driver who spoke on condition of anonymity criticized the quality of the new number plates saying they are of low quality and will fade off within a short period of time.
