Voter registration period extended in Sudan

Voter registration for the Sudanese elections has been extended for another four days after voter turnout remained low even hours before the registration deadline.

Sudan’s government has scheduled elections for April 2015 but some parties have threatened to boycott, saying the elections should not come until after a national political dialogue process is concluded.

The National Elections Commission chief Mukhtar Al-Asam announced the extension of voter registration from 11 November to 15 November.

He further said the intention by the NEC to extend the voter registration period for four days is to give political parties ample time to send their delegates to the registration centres in the states.

El Asam stressed that the registration is the backbone of the upcoming elections and that any political party that encourages the registration of its supporters will have an advantage in the vote.
