Unity State authorities deny report of fighting

The Unity State government says that there have not been any recent clashes in the state.

Kan Nyi Leer, the director of information of the Unity State government said today, “We haven’t had any attack. The situation now is good.”

“I’m currently inside Bentiu and there are not any problems in Bentiu. There isn’t anything that happened.”

He said that some members of the SPLA-Juba shot guns in the air to celebrate the New Year but there was no attack. He said SPLA-IO also had shot in the air.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, a spokesperson of SPLM-IO also stated that he was not aware of any clashes in Unity State.

However, the IGAD peace mediators have announced that they have instructed ceasefire monitors to investigate reports of fighting in the state. The envoys yesterday condemned reports of fighting “near Bentiu.”
