Two vehicles ambushed and torched on Nimule-Juba road

Two trucks traveling the main route between the South Sudanese capital and neighboring Uganda were attacked and destroyed on Monday night, according to local authorities.

Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Information Mark Akio Ukinbul confirmed two trucks were burned by unknown gunmen at 11:00 p.m. while traveling to Nimule last night and as a result one driver was injured.

“The news we are getting from Nimule area is that there were cars at about 11:30 at night, two cars  were attacked that were coming from Juba to Nimule … between Kerepi and Moli,” he said.

The minister said it was not known who carried out the attack: “The security organs are still trying to established the facts as to who did that.”

Likewise, Pageri Area Administrator Emilio Igga confirmed the incident saying that attackers shot at two commercial vehicles heading to Uganda, causing the drivers to flee, after which the attackers set fire to the vehicles.

One of the drivers was injured and fled to the forest and later made his way to Pageri. From there he was taken to Nimule for medical treatment.

Citing the driver as a witness, he also said that some of the attackers were wearing SPLA military uniforms while others were in plain clothes. “Those were not civilians. Those are gunmen,” he said.

However, Emilio noted that traffic was moving normally on the road on Tuesday, with some extra security forces deployed to escort commercial vehicles.
