Top S. Sudanese diplomat slams government and resigns post

South Sudan’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Francis George Nazario, has resigned from the government in protest of what he termed the government’s ‘unwillingness’ to bring peace to the country and end the suffering of the people.

In a statement obtained by Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the ambassador asked the government in Juba to step down immediately, pointing out the current political turmoil resulted in the killing of thousands of civilians besides displacement of another million who are currently seeking protection in the UN bases across the country or in neighbouring countries.

He also blamed the government leadership for repression of the media and interference and ‘meddling’ in the affairs of the ministry for which he was working.

“Most government institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation for which I am working has been undermined,” he alleged.

“The ministry is being systematically undermined through the continued interference and uncalled for meddling of the Ministry of National Security and Office of the President.”

Nazario said the ongoing conflict has uncovered the real intentions of the political elite in South Sudan, saying it shows clearly that a considerable number of them only understand the logic of arms and tend to use force in dealing with national dilemmas.

The diplomat said, “Given these facts, I can’t continue to associate myself with such leadership and government. I remain loyal to South Sudan and am ready to work with anyone who is ready and willing to bring peace and national reconciliation; who is willing to build a united, democratic and prosperous South Sudan.”

“It is extremely difficult to continue to serve a government that is insensitive to the needs and suffering of the people of South Sudan.”

“I am therefore announcing my decision to quit the government. My aim is to work in the relentless pursuit of peace, national reconciliation and prosperity for all the people of South Sudan,” he concluded.

For his part, the spokesman of South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry Mayuen Makol denied any official notification from the deputy ambassador about his resignation, saying they just heard about his statement of resignation while he was still abroad.

The ambassador who resigned was on a leave in Brussels where he went to visit his family, he told Radio Tamazuj.
