Aid workers in South Sudan reported on Monday that a huge number of children’s textbooks were set on fire in the town Malakal.

Citing “tensions and insecurity,” the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported the development in its latest humanitarian bulletin released today.

“The tensions and insecurity 
in Malakal town continued to hinder education activities, with the most recent being the burning of 11 containers of textbooks meant for distribution in several locations,” reads the notice.

OCHA stated that investigations have been launched into the incident. No further information was immediately available.

Malakal is the capital of Upper Nile State and is controlled by SPLA-Juba, the armed group controlling South Sudan's national government.

The town remains largely depopulated, with most of the civil population having fled or sought UN protection at a fortified camp on the outskirts of town, following fighting and ethnically targeted violence on a massive scale earlier this year.
