Sudan: Tribunal to hear Sennar lands dispute

A court in Sinja town in Sudan’s Sennar State set up for the adjudication of dispute over farmlands between farmers and the state government set a date of 14 June for hearing of the cases.

Some farmers have claimed that about their three of colleagues were arrested by police in connection with lands dispute.

Sennar state farmers have been protesting against a decision by the Governor Ahmed Abbas to deduct and reassign 10 per cent of the total area designated for rainy-season agricultural projects in order to open up corridors for nomads.

Abel Azim Ahmed El Faki, a farmer, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the court will complete hearing of the complaint raised earlier by the farmers on Monday, noting the court beforehand started hearing of the same case on 7 July.

He indicated that about three farmers were arrested by police over the lands disagreement in Damazin town. Two of the farmers were identified as Jamal and Mohammed Abdul Karim Abu Tawila.

El Faki accused the state government of trying to weaken the unity of the Irrigated Sector Farmers after they collectively rejected the decision by the governor.

The farmer stressed that the state government will be held responsible for any failure of this year’s planting season owing to the current obstructive measures on farmers.
