Sudan: Sit-in protest in Lagawa passes 50 days

Citizens of Lagawa town of Western Kordofan on Tuesday said that their sit-in protest in the town square has reached its 50th day. The protesters are calling for better basic services.

Jalal Fadhal-Mawla, a member of the strikers’ organizing committee told Radio Tamazuj that protesters are ready to celebrate the New Year's Eve while continuing their sit-in, with the participation from all community sectors including students, youth and women.

He said that the protesters appreciated a call made by the SPLM-N deputy chairman Abdelaziz Al-Hilu yesterday who called upon all opposition forces in Sudan to join Lagawa citizens in carrying out such protests throughout Sudan.

Jalal further hinted that the protestors will plan for the next step as the government did not respond to their demands. He criticized both state and national media houses of not reporting their cause.

“We are very persistent on our stand and demands. We are urging all the civil organizations to stand with us. There is a total absence of media coverage in reflecting our concerns whether at the state or national levels.”

“Roads, health, education and portable water are our demands,” said Jalal.
