Sudan’s security and intelligence chief resigned after the president was toppled in a coup, as protesters remained encamped outside the army headquarters.

On Saturday, the state news agency SUNA announced that Salah Abdallah, known as Salah Gosh, who headed the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), has stepped down from his post.

According to SUNA, Gosh tendered his resignation on Friday.

"The chief of the transitional military council, Abdel Fattah Burhan, has accepted the resignation of …the chief NISS," the new military council said.

Gosh’s resignation comes after Defense Minister Awad Ibn Auf stepped down as head of the military council on Friday. Ibn Auf was one of the leaders behind the ouster of Bashir.

The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which has been leading protests to demand a civilian administration, called for more protests Saturday.

It called for the immediate transfer of power as well as the arrests and trials of all prominent figures of the past regime involved in crimes against the Sudanese people.
