Sudan releases SCP opposition members in Soderi

Members of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) arrested in Suderi Locality in Sudan’s North Kordofan state have been released on bail.

The political detainees spent about 87 days in the Bara Prison.

Sources said that the released prisoners visited their boss Ibrahim al-Sheik who is still in detention in En Nahud town shortly after their release.

Among those detained in Soderi were the chairman of the SCP in the area Mohamed Nur Terab and Secretary General Abdul Qader Hakimdar.

In spite of their release, however, the SCP office in Omdurman was raided on Sunday morning by masked gunmen, who harassed party members and ransacked the office.

Radio Dabanga reported that seven party members were present when the gunmen arrived.

One of them, Abdel Salam Mohamedein, said, “A group of 12 masked gunmen in civilian clothes raided the SCP office in the Abbasiya district, at about 3 am on Sunday. The gunmen tied and beat us.”

“After they had robbed us of our mobile phones and other personal belongings at gunpoint, the gunmen destroyed all the computers, files, documents, and furniture belonging to the party.”

There are still 21 SCP members detained in Sudan, among them SCP chairman Ibrahim El Sheikh.
