Sudan: Lawyer expects release of SCP leader

Native administration and other community leaders in En Nahud town have joined consultations alongside a national advocacy committee to discuss the possible release of the detained head of the Sudanese Congress Party Ibrahim al Sheikh.

The politician, who hails from the town, was arrested on 8 June after making critical remarks of a government paramilitary division known as the Rapid Support Forces.

The SCP is a minor but very old Sudanese political party. Their offices in En Nahud have been raided several times since Ibrahim’s arrest, with other party supporters now also in detention.

El Sate El Haj, a lawyer and member of the defense team of Ibrahim al Sheikh, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that consultations are being carried out on the matter of the politician’s release.

He claimed that President Omer Hassan al-Bashir has promised to release Ibrahim al Sheikh within hours.

The lawyer admitted that there is no progress on the legal procedures so far, saying the investigation is not yet completed since the client’s file was withdrawn from the court in En Nahud town last month.
