Sudan concerned over call for UN to monitor human rights violations in Abyei

Sudan's government has expressed reservations over a call by the United Nations security council for human rights monitoring and reporting to take place in the disputed Abyei area between Sudan and South Sudan.

A draft resolution of the Security Council regarding Abyei stressed the need for effective human rights monitoring and reporting in Abyei, including reporting on sexual and gender-based violence against women and children. According to the draft, there have been no actions taken for the UN mission in Abyei to begin human rights monitoring and reporting in the area.

Sudan's government raised reservation with this call for human rights monitoring, noting that the UN mission in Abyei previously has not  been mandated to monitor and report on human rights violations there.
