SPLM-IO consultative conference closes today

A consultative meeting of the SPLM-In Opposition led by former South Sudan vice president Riek Machar is scheduled to conclude on Friday in the border town of Pagak near Ethiopia.

The Pagak conference is part of the IGAD-mediated peace talks since January last year between the SPLA-Juba led by President Salva Kiir and SPLA-IO of Riek Machar.

SPLM-IO deputy head of information and public relations Manawa Peter Gatkuoth told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that the meeting would conclude today after discussing all reports so that resolutions are adopted.

Manawa, who is also the official rebel spokesperson, said the meeting discussed issues pertaining to the peace process in South Sudan.

He pointed out that issues related to a transitional period including powers of the president and prime minister during a transitional government of national unity and federal system that should be implemented at the beginning of the transitional period were thoroughly discussed.

The former Jonglei state minister of physical infrastructure further said they also discussed the status of the opposition fighters until reintegration is completed, besides the formation of South Sudan Armed Forces (SSAF).

The spokesman added that they touched on the compensation of the conflict-affected citizens especially in greater Upper Nile region where many civilians lost their lives and properties due to the ongoing civil war.

The meeting stressed international or regional trials for those who committed atrocities against innocent civilians in Juba and elsewhere in South Sudan, according to Manawa Gatkuoth.
