Malakal town in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State came under renewed artillery fire by opposition forces stationed across the Nile River, territory controlled by the rebels, beginning at about 8:00 p.m. on Monday.

No casualties were reported after the shelling.

Several sources within the UN Malakal PoC told Radio Tamazuj that the shelling was at Hai Matar. They further said the government forces for their part replied to the shelling from 8:00 until 9:00 p.m.

“The shelling came from Ditang area and the artillery fire targeted the airport. So the government forces that were stationed near the airport started also to shell the rebels,” an IDP said.

The two warring factions haven’t yet issued any official statement with regard to the alleged shelling on the town.

Meanwhile, sources among the internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were relocated to a new extension site of the UN base said they fear for their lives after recent tribal clashes.
