South Sudan’s Makuei ‘hopes’ for peace in near future

Michael Makuei Lueth, a senior member of the SPLM-Juba faction has expressed ‘hope’ for an agreement with the rival SPLM-IO faction despite earlier downplaying a proposed peace agreement as ‘controversial.’

“We hope in the coming period… Sudan’s government will agree with their rebels and South Sudan’s government will agree with our rebels,” he said today.

The information minister and member of the ruling SPLM-Juba faction was speaking to Radio Tamazuj after a joint border commission meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Earlier this month Makuei downplayed the significance of a draft agreement with South Sudanese rebels, criticizing elements of the proposed power-sharing deal.
