South Sudan’s Kiir arrives in Cairo

South Sudan President Salva Kiir arrived in Cairo on Thursday for a two-day visit during which he will hold talks with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

The meetings are specifically scheduled to touch on conflicts in the region over the Nile basin, the ongoing fighting in South Sudan and negotiations on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Al-Sisi and Kiir previously met on the sidelines of September’s UN General Assembly.

South Sudan is currently seeking membership in the Arab League, a process the country's foreign minister, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, said could take some time.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab welcomed Kiir at the airport, according to diplomatic sources.
