South Sudan rains displace thousands in Aweil North

More than 3,000 people were displaced by the heavy rain floods in Aweil North County according to the acting state governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Salva Chol Ayat.

He witnessed that since Saturday heavy rains have caused displacement of 700 households within four Payams of Gok Machar. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, after a visit to Gok Machar, Salva Chol Ayat said that the two roads linking Kiir Adem and Ariath to Gok Machar and Ariath were cut off by the floods.

Many houses and schools have been washed away by the water-flood he said: “As it is a natural one, we cannot control it but we can join our hands together with UN agencies and NGOs to help these people. We have to provide first aid kits, shelters and basic services.” He told that without an adequate response towards the road connections, the SPLA soldiers and citizens in those areas will suffer.

He is also fearing for diseases affecting children and elder people, like malaria, waterborne diseases.'' Chol appeals to the NGOs and UN to respond quickly.

Aweil North County Commissioner Kuol Athuai said that his county is under threat. “Our government is quite helpless, so I am asking the NGOs to rescue the situation”. Commissioner Kuol repeatedly pointed out that the flood have affected four payams from his county such as Kiir Adem, Warguet, Waragany, and Majok Dengdit payams which have displaced people to Gok Machar headquarter for their safety. He added that no loss of human lives have been reported, but that many people were complaining to have lost some of their cattle.
