The South Sudan Army has jailed one of its own top generals while denying any connection between the arrest and rumours of an attempted coup. Deputy Director of Military Intelligence Major General Mac Paul is currently under detention, Sudan Tribune reports, citing military sources.

Maj-Gen. Mac Paul was arrested about two weeks ago and taken to a prison in Yei.  A number of non-commissioned officers, three majors and two colonels – Col. Garang Deng and Col. Alfred Sebit – are also reportedly arrested, Radio Tamazuj has learnt, without being able to confirm.

The Army Chief of Staff, James Hoth Mai, denied rumours of a coup attempt. He commented to Sudan Tribune: “We are a national army with no political allegiance and activities.”

SPLA Chief of Staff James Hoth Mai also noted that Maj-Gen. Mach Paul and another senior figure arrested months ago, Marial Nuor, "have long been controversial figures. Their names have always appeared in illegal detention and torture of their opponents.”
