South Sudan’s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, John Gai Yoach will pay a three-day visit to the Republic of Sudan with the aim of discussing ways to enhance cooperation on education issues.

At a press briefing at Juba airport on his way to Sudan, the minister explained that his visit will focus in part on issues that went unaddressed since the separation of South Sudan, including the matter of teachers’ pensions, some university assets, and southern students who are still studying in Sudan.  

Gai was accompanied by the five vice chancellors of South Sudan’s universities, namely the University of Juba, University of Western Bar el Ghazal in Wau, John Garang University in Bor and Upper Nile University in Malakal.

“We are travelling to Khartoum to follow up about four issues,” the minister said, explaining that one issue was South Sudan’s use of the Sudan School certificate examinations for secondary exams.

He emphasized that they will also discuss ways for Sudan to host South Sudanese students particularly for those who didn’t get the chance to go to university since 2010.

Last month South Sudan’s president relieved seven vice chancellors and appointed or reappointed new vice chancellors, being: John Akec - University of Juba, Samson Wasara - University of Western Bar el Ghazal in Wau, Isaac Chuir - Upper Nile University in Malakal, Julia Aker - John Garang University in Bor and Agrey Ayuen - University of Rumbek.
