A committee of lawyers and rights activists set up in Sudan’s Sennar State said it will challenge the decision recently taken by the university administration to dismiss over 200 students.

The dismissals came after tensions between students and the university after the release of examinations results in the faculty of education.

The group says that the students from the faculty of education were dismissed on the basis of their political affiliation. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, lawyer Islam Adam Omer said that they have started first meeting with students to gather information on the case.

Adam, a member of the Sudanese Observatory Network for Human Rights, stated that they will initially consider challenging the administrative processes that were used in the dismissal.

In this case, they would challenge the decision in accordance with the administrative regulations guiding the University of Sennar, according to the lawyer.

“In case of failure to reach a satisfactory solution we will file a complaint to court that will give everyone his or her right,” said the activist.

“The students did not actually incite violence in the premises of the university, but they were arbitrarily dismissed when they protested against the policies of the university administration,” she explained.

She noted none of the students was detained following the protests against the university management.
