Sennar University classes suspended after student unrest

The Vice Chancellor of Sennar University has ordered the suspension of classes at a number of colleges and ordered students to leave dormitories.

The order came after violent incidents last week in which supporters of the Islamic Movement clashed with supporters of other political organizations at the university.

Supporters of the ruling party NCP from outside the university were also reportedly involved in the unrest, and there was heavy presence of security services and police at the university up to yesterday, a local source told Radio Tamazuj.

Security forces raided student dormitories last Friday and Saturday and arrested dozens of students, Radio Dabanga reported.

Most of the detained were released, except 26 Darfuris, while other students were evicted from their dormitories: “Darfuri students who were not held, are homeless now, living on the streets, without shelter or food,” said one student.
