Rumbek National Secondary School candidates are demanding to sit for the Sudan Secondary School certificate exams.

Last week it was reported that classes were halted at the school after a group of about 300 protested the use of the new curriculum.

The Catholic Radio Network reported from Rumbek yesterday that some students said they prefer to sit for Sudan’s examinations and not South Sudan’s.

Rebecca Athen, students’ representative, said after meeting the state Education Minister that the South Sudan Certificate was not recognized worldwide.

She pointed to reports that students who sat for the country’s first secondary examinations were not accepted in public universities.

Another student representative Akol Paul said they attended lessons late and cannot sit for South Sudan Exams, but are ready to sit for the Sudan certificate exams.

Rumbek National Secondary Deputy Director for Administration Manjur Roman Ramadan said teachers were ready to teach the Sudan syllabus only after they taught the South Sudan curriculum.
