Renk farmers expect unsuccessful harvest

The harvest season in northern Upper Nile has not been successful in spite of a favorable cultivation season, according to El Fadil Deng, the head of the Upper Nile Farmers Union.

He blamed the failure on insecurity due to fighting in the Renk area between the country’s two warring parties.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Deng enumerated many challenges facing this year’s harvest, most notably insecurity. He said that they are experiencing a lack of labourers, saying that nearly 70% of sesame crop has has not been harvested up till now.

“After we had cultivated successfully, we are now being faced with challenges of labourers and the main problem was caused by insecurity in the area,” he said.
