Rebel spokesperson: Return resource revenue to the states

SPLM/A-IO chief negotiatior Taban Deng Gai has proposed that the majority of revenue from all natural resources sold from South Sudan be returned to the states they come from.

Gai, the former Unity state governor, told Radio Tamazuj that 70 percent of all sales of oil and other resources should go to state governments to fund social improvements.

“Any resources in any state is the right of that state to enjoy 70 percent of these resources for equal development,” he said.

Resolving this issue, he said, is critical to ending the current conflict.

Gai also said the SPLM/A-IO is committed to the ongoing Intergovernmental Authority on Development-led peace process, saying, “We think it is the only body that could bring peace in South Sudan.”

The rebels are proposing a structure that includes an executive president and executive prime minister, but no vice president or deputy prime ministers.
