Prices rise as Khartoum govt plans to lift subsidies

Prices of commodities are increasing rapidly in Sudan’s capital Khartoum and other states as the pound drops against the dollar.

The price of US dollar against the Sudanese pound rose to 11.55 SDG in the parallel market yesterday afternoon.

Several traders told Radio Tamazuj that prices have increased in various markets after officials announced a plan to lift government subsidies on wheat, flour, fuel and electricity in order to avoid economic collapse.

"The price of a carton of Egyptian lentils increased from 180 SDG to 220 SDG, whereas a carton of tea leaves increased from 45 SDG to 60 SDG, and a carton of coffee has risen from 50 SDG to 60 SDG," said one of traders.

Meanwhile, a utensils trader said most of the prices increased by 40% while the price of US dollar continues to rise against the local currency.
