Dozens of local residents at Abu Saed (Shigla) residential area in Omdurman town took to the street Wednesday to protest against water supply cuts since more than a month in the area.

Several witnesses told Radio Tamazuj that dozens of residents of Al Fatihab residential area organized protests against irregular drinking water supply for more than a month.

The price of a barrel of water reportedly reached 60 SDG in the area. The protestors, mostly women, blocked the main street leading to the south of Omdurman at the old bus station for more than half an hour.

The angry citizens were carrying empty pots of water and chanting slogans calling for the provision of water.

An eyewitness said that riot police intervened and dispersed the protests by using tear gas and batons. They further said some of the women fainted due to the tear gas used by the police and that they were to taken to nearby houses for first aid.

A group of youths later joined the protests, which triggered clashes between police and protesters, according to the same source. The protests continued until yesterday evening. Police arrested a number of youths who participated in the riot.

The same sources pointed out that many police vehicles with soldiers were parked near the Islamic University to monitor the situation.
