Officials meet in Aweil over deteriorating education

The Northern Bahr al Ghazal state government convened a one-day conference to discuss ways to improve education, after reports of deteriorating conditions at schools.

The conference on Tuesday brought together authorities from different fives counties including the county commissioners.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Minister of Information and Telecommunications Jackline Nyibol Ajonga said the conference aimed to address some challenges facing education across the state, including poor transportation.

She said the conference was open by the Caretaker Governor Kuel Aguer Kuel, who asked during his opening speech, “Why is it that education is getting worse in the state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal? In terms of national examinations you find that our students get B and not A across the state.”

According to the minister, the participants at the conference discussed lack of trained teachers and prevalence of untrained teachers.

“Low payment and lack of equipments like computers to update the system of education to the international levels is another factor,” Nyibol stated.

Asked whether the conference would make any impact, Nyibol said she believed very much that they conference would improve the education in the state.

She noted they were also concerned about the lack of teacher training at the national level.
