At least 14 new cases of cholera have been reported in a previously unaffected area of Eastern Equatoria State, according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

An outbreak of cholera started earlier this year in South Sudan’s capital Juba, where it has since been contained, while cases have continued in Eastern Equatoria.

In a situation report released Thursday, though dated 2 December, UNICEF stated, “A new cluster of confirmed cholera cases has been reported in Kapoeta South County, in Eastern Equatoria State. This is the first time cholera cases have been reported in this county. As of last week, 14 cases with no deaths were reported.”

UNICEF added that new cases were also recently reported in Lopa/Lafon and Ikotos counties in Eastern Equatoria. To date in 2014, there have been 6,421 cholera cases including 167 deaths from five states and 16 counties.
