New camp for thousands of South Sudanese refugees in Sudan

At least 5,000 South Sudanese living in Sudan’s Khartoum state are scheduled to be voluntarily moved to a new camp tomorrow, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The refugees are currently living in an open area and are scheduled to be moved from the Shagara area to the new Bantiu site in the Jebel Awlia area of Khartoum state.

The South Sudanese living in the camp are among the 350,000 who decided to stay in Sudan after the south achieved independence in 2011. According to UNHCR, 40,000 of them live in open areas.
