New arrivals in Duk County from Nuer areas of Jonglei

The government in Duk County of Jonglei State says there is a new influx of displaced people coming from Ayod and Uror counties daily. The reason is hunger in the mentioned areas.

Michael Wuor Malual, Duk County Commissioner told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that they have received currently over 24,000 IDPs since August.

“Since August people are continuing coming and now in Pajut bordering Lou, we have received 12,000, in Poktak we have over 4,000, in Ayueldit there are almost to 6,000, and in Patuoinoi we have 2,000 but the number keeps increasing on daily basis,” he said.

The commissioner said until now they have not been registered by UN agencies officially so that they are given food but they were registered at border crossing by the local authorities. Wuor stated that they are planning to make new verifications with UN agencies.

He pointed out that many of the new arrivals are women and children coming from the two Nuer-inhabited counties bordering Duk County and they are looking for food. The mentioned areas are under control of the SPLM-IO rebel group.

Additionally, the commissioner said the situation is calm saying relations between Gawaar Nuer from Ayod and the people of Duk are peaceful. He said relations with the Lou Nuer are not as good but they are still trying to maintain good relations with them.
