N. Bahr el Ghazal women peace conference concludes in Aweil

A two-day women leadership conference concluded Wednesday with renewed calls for unity and better relations in Northern Bahr el Ghazal's Aweil town.

About 100 women from different counties attended the conference organized, funded, and implemented by the women.

Awut Kuel Kuel, one of the participants told Radio Tamazuj that they came up with recommendations to renew their relations as Northern Bahr el Ghazal State women and double their efforts in demanding service delivery.

“We discussed a lot. Of course, there are a lot of things affecting women in the current time. We agreed to empower our relations so that we can be able to tackle all the problems. There are some locations which lack transports, water, schools, and many more hindering women's progress,’’ said Awut.

Rose Aker Deng, an activist said women were divided by the former states of Aweil East, Lol, and Aweil, but the conference has reunited them.

“What I have understood in the conference from the previous day until yesterday, is that the conference discussed the division of women and their reunification. So as we come again, we need to have peace among ourselves,’’ said Rose.

The chairperson for the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Women Association Elizabeth Ajok Atak said the conference was initiated so that they can be able to handle issues affecting women as well as discuss women's involvement in governance.

She said, "The women leadership conference we have concluded was meant to see the women ratio in government seats at the state, county, and payam levels so that we advocate for our rights. We also discussed unity amongst us and what we should do to attain the 35 percent affirmative action. Right now, we have only been given 21 percent, where is the 14 percent?"
