Primary and secondary schools in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr El Ghazal State are deteriorating in terms of teaching quality, according to the state education ministry.

In a press statement to Al Masier newspaper, the State Education Minister Kun Deng said the education system is steadily deteriorating this year due to a shortage of teachers, especially in subjects such as science at the secondary level.

He explained that there are not enough science teachers, the salaries are two low, and teachers have not been issued their ‘chalk allowances’, especially in the counties.

The minister expressed concern also that the delayed start of the academic year in February will affect the schooling due to water supply problems. Many classes are being held under trees, the minister said.
