The international medical organization Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders (MSF) on Tuesday announced it has suspended most of its medical activities in Maban, South Sudan.

In a statement extended to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, MSF said the suspension comes after the organization suffered a violent attack on Monday morning.

“Yesterday morning, a group of unidentified armed men broke into MSF office and compound, looting the organization and staff’s properties, burning down a tent full of equipment and destroying most of the vehicles and communication devices. No MSF staff were physically injured during the attack. The team is now safe and the organization is currently monitoring the situation,” the statement reads in part.

The medical organization noted that the withdrawal of its medical services will affect more than 80,000 people living in Maban as well as the refugee population in Doro Camp. However, MSF head of mission in South Sudan Samuel Theodore said a small team is still on the ground and will continue to provide life-saving treatment to patients with most critical medical conditions.

MSF further condemned the attack which it termed as brutal and called for the respect and protection of humanitarian aid workers and facilities.
