Makuei threatens counter-offensive against S Sudan rebels

Michael Makuei Lueth, South Sudan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, has warned that government forces are ready to pursue rebel forces loyal to Riek Machar in “hot pursuit” if they continue to provoke government forces.

This comes after reports of clashes in Unity State yesterday and today.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the national parliament, Makuei said, “This time if they attack us in any place anywhere, then we will give them a hot pursuit, no going back.”

“The rebels have been shelling the town (Bentiu) but anyway our position is very clear, if the rebels attempt to attack us again we will get them, we will give them a hot pursuit and will not stop except when we reach the place they usually start from,” Makuei told press in Juba.

Asked about the next round of peace talks, Makuei said he had no idea about it and was waiting for a call from the IGAD mediators. He said the talks may not be of any help if the rebels continue violating the ceasefire agreement.
