Maban MP condemns threats to expel refugees

A member of the South Sudanese national parliament representing Maban constituency has condemned reported threats by youths of the area to expel Blue Nile refugees.

In a statement to Radio Tamazuj, MP David Ongo Dimi said that the decision to host the refugees from Blue Nile State lies with the national government, not with local authorities or the community.

Dimi called on the citizens of Maban and refugees from Blue Nile to resolve their differences, which he described as minor, pointing to the historical ties between the communities.

In another statement extended to Radio Tamazuj, Sila Joshua, a member of the Maban diaspora, said, “chasing them out of South Sudan territory is not a solution to the problem, UN has rules to be considered and that is against the human right mandate.”

He argued that Maban leaders should discuss with the United Nations and refugee leaders for ways to ensure the stability of the county.

“We strongly reject the decision that has been made by Maban leaders or youth to let the refugees leave the country. These are our people/neighbors despite what occurred due to misunderstanding,” he said.
