Lawyer objects to preferential treatment of officer who killed woman

Ahmed El Omda, deputy head of Awadiya Ajabna's advocacy committee, has criticized the management of Khartoum's federal Kober Prison for what he termed as “special treatment” for a police officer currently in jail for killing Ajabna.

Ajabna was killed by a police officer outside her home in the Dem residential area on the outskirts of Sudan's capital in 2012.

A Khartoum criminal court in November sentenced the offender on charges of premeditated murder under article 130 of the Sudanese penal code.

El Omda told Radio Tamazuj that the prison authorities are not implementing the laws fairly. He said  the perpetrator is not being treated like a person who is facing death sentence as per the court ruling.

He pointed out that the prisoner was held at the department of political detainees. He added that the convicted officer is now occupying the same room which had been given to the National Umma Party leader Sadiq al-Mahdi during his recent arrest.

The victim’s advocate described the move as a gross violation of the constitution and laws as well as Sudanese norms.
