Sudan’s security forces have found "large sums of cash" at former president Omar al-Bashir’s residence, the military council said.

In an interview with state TV on Sunday, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Transitional Military Council said they had searched Bashir’s residence and found more than $350,000 and €7 million, as well as 5 billion Sudanese pounds.

“The money was found at the residence of the former president. The money has already been deposited into the central bank’s account,” he said.

Al-Burhan pointed out that the former president’s home was searched by a joint security force in the presence of public prosecution officials.  

He said the former president had been moved to Kobar prison in the capital Khartoum. The new military leader also confirmed that several top political leaders who served during the former regime had been jailed.

Al-Burhan noted that the military council ordered the suspension of the transfer of ownership of any shares until further notice.

On April 11, Omar al-Bashir, who seized power in 1989 after a coup, was forced to step down by the army following months of protests against his rule.

Meanwhile, there is mounting pressure on Sudan’s military rulers to hand over power to a civilian administration.

The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which has been leading the protests, has vowed to stay on the streets until there is a civilian government.
