Lakes State Governor Matur Chut Dhoul said two members of parliament who have now been detained for more than two months are being investigated for organizing a deadly ambush attack in October.

Isaac Makur Buoc Apac and Marik Nanga Marik were arrested in late October in connection with an attack on members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Though MPs are supposed to have immunity, Dhoul has said that he had lifted it for the two. Neither has been charged with a crime.

“Investigations will prove the crimes that they have committed,” Dhoul said. “If they are found not to be guilty, then they will be released. So long as they are not yet being investigated, they will remain in detention until they are investigated.”

Family members of the two MPs said they are not being treated fairly and are worried that their health will suffer. They said unless the two are going to be formally charged, they should be released on bail.
