Kongdai Company awarded contract for Gok Machar road

The government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has contracted Ayat and Africa Kongdai companies to repair the road connecting Aweil and Aweil North counties.

This comes amid a long-running dispute between Kongdai and striking employees, who claim unpaid dues.

Last week Caretaker Governor Kuel Aguer Kuel launched the road maintenance project, which will improve the road between Aweil town and Gok Machar, the headquarters of Aweil North County.

The State Minister of Infrastructure Angui Ding said they have started the road maintenance of the road, which he added would eventually stretch all the way to Kiir Adem at the Sudan border.

Angui said the maintenance funds that they received were from the President of the Republic.

He explained the state managed to generate some small income from state revenue collections, and combined this with some money donated by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Angui declined to disclose the amount of money donated by the president, saying the citizens do not need to know the amounts of money involved but rather need to see roads constructed in the state.

Meanwhile, traders complained about the road between Kiir Adem and Sudan, saying it has been flooded, preventing heavy trucks from bringing goods to Gok Machar.

Angui said construction on the stretch between Kiir Adem and Sudan will not begin until after the stretch between Gok Machar and Aweil.
