The government of Lakes State and the UN Mission in South Sudan cooperated to repair a key road that connects the national capital with greater Bahr al Ghazal region.

UNMISS donated fuel for repair of Bahr Naam road between Rumbek and greater Yirol and Juba. The road had been damaged by rains.

In a statement on its website on Wednesday, the UN Mission said that 17 vehicles were stranded on the road due to mud and flooding.

The statement noted that Minister of Physical Infrastructure Abraham Meen Kuc inspected the road together with two other state ministers and the UNMISS State Coordinator Kwame Dwamena Aboagye.

UNMISS quoted the infrastructure minister as saying, “When we talk of the road that is connecting Rumbek East, Yirol West up to greater Yirol counties, it was badly (affected).”

Kuc thanked UNMISS for the fuel needed to repair the road, saying, “Otherwise we would not have done this excellent work. It is with their support that we are able to catch up those badly damaged areas around this Bhar-Naam river side.”

Under its new mandate, UNMISS no longer prioritizes state-building and infrastructure development; apparently it was induced to help repair the road owing to the urgency of the matter for humanitarian and security reasons.
