The Juba Central Prison has permitted about 50 prisoners to cultivate at Rajaf Farm, in order to help alleviate hunger in prisons.

Inmates are cultivating maize, okra, potatoes and other vegetables on excess land owned by the prisons authority near to Juba.

UNDP South Sudan, which is supporting the initiative as part of its Access to Justice programme, stated, “The farm in Rajaf East, with irrigation facility from river Nile, now looks unbelievably green and fertile.”

The UN agency commended the prison service for “positively addressing hunger and poverty in the country amidst warnings of impending famine.”
