Jonglei-Lakes local authorities meet at Mingkamen

The commissioners of Bor, Duk and Twic East counties and Awerial County have met in Mingkaman to discuss relations between Jonglei State refugees in the area and Lakes State host communities.

Twic East County Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuc said the meeting resulted in a consensus to put in place measures to curb cattle theft and encourage good social relations among the communities.

Refugees from Jonglei State moved across the Nile into eastern Lakes State after violence rocked their home communities in late 2013 into early 2014.

Jurkuc said theft of cattle has been a “major issue,” which authorities discussed with each other.

Separately, two deaths due to tuberculosis are reported in Awerial County of Lakes State, where Mingkamen and other refugee camps are located. 78 cases are in treatment.

Arkangelo Ali organization said that this represents a rise in cases over the last month. The organization says it received drugs from UNDP Global Fund to treat the disease.
