The IGAD Monitoring and Verification Mechanism released a summary on Sunday of recent ceasefire violations by the warring parties in South Sudan.

Monitors say that Salva Kiir’s forces violated the ceasefire in northern Jonglei State last week while Riek Machar’s violated it in Upper Nile and Unity states last month.

Last week from 2-4 November forces under the overall command of Salva Kiir committed violations in northern Jonlgei state, according to the document. SPLA-Juba troops launched attacks into SPLA-IO areas of Pigi County, sources earlier said. 

“As a result of investigations, and the weight of evidence collated, it is the opinion of the JTC [Joint Technical Committee] that Government Forces violated the … Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (23 January 2014), over the period 2-4 November in Malakal and Panyikang Counties, Upper Nile State, and in Peji County, Jonglei State,” reads the summary document.

Meanwhile, forces under the overall command of Riek Machar committed violations in Upper Nile State a month ago.

“It is the opinion of the JTC [Joint Technical Committee] that SPLM/A (IO) Forces violated the …  Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (23 January 2014), over the period 10-11 October 2014 in Panyikang County (Upper Nile State),” reads the document, also referring to attacks in Manyo County.

Ceasefire monitors stated, “It is therefore recommended that the IGAD Special Envoys take the appropriate action in response to these violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.”

As earlier reported, the IGAD Monitors also hold SPLM-IO responsible for attacks on 27-29 October in Rubkona County of Unity State. They further hold Salva Kiir’s troops responsible for recruiting child soldiers in Bentiu and Mayom counties.
