Heavy gunfire in Doleib Hill area

Civilians started running toward the UN base in Malakal seeking protection since yesterday in Malakal town in Upper Nile, saying that they were scared by the sounds of the battle in Doleib Hill. 

Multiple sources told Radio Tamazuj this afternoon that they heard from afar sounds of heavy guns for several hours this morning. Citizens pointed out that they fear rebels could advance to Malakal.

Santino who spoke inside the UN base said he ran after reports suggested that there were clashes at Doleib Hill area: “Yes I can hear gunshots, but it is very far.”

Meanwhile, another citizen explained that there has been fear among civilians this morning within the town, but the situation has returned to normal.

“I came to UN base at around 6:00 a.m. after hearing rumours that the rebels had crossed from Canal to Obel area,” he said.

He the situation has returned to normal after hearing that the rebels were repulsed by the SPLA at Obel area, about 25 minutes driving.

He further said citizens have arrived in the UN base, some of whom returned back home after they came to realize that there was nothing to fear.

John Akech also said he is unlikely to return back home soon, describing the security as “tense”.

The number of new arrivals in the UN base this morning is estimated at hundreds, according to Akach.

Philip Aguer, spokesman of SPLA-Juba forces, accused forces loyal to Riek Machar of carrying out attacks on Gongbaar, Doleib Hill and Duk Duk areas in Upper Nile.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Aguer claimed that SPLA-Juba is still maintaining its position in Doleib Hill, Malakal and Renk towns.

“Actually it is they who attack us, but when they feel ashamed of what they are doing they accuse the SPLA of attacking them,” he said.

He further said Riek Machar forces have been attacking areas along the Upper Nile-Sudan border since 17 September 2014.

Gatluak Liphos, Upper Nile Minister of Information said, ”This morning at 5:00 there were clashes at Doleib Hill area… there was an attack by the rebels who were based in Canal and Khor Fulus.”

He said they crossed the Sobat River and attacked SPLA-Juba positions but were repulsed.
