Health situation “alarming” in South Kordofan’s rebel areas; four die of yellow fever

People living in the rebel-controlled areas in South Kordofan are facing an extremely difficult health situation and an acute shortage of medicines.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, medical doctor Tombe Jaro, in charge of medical supplies in the rebel-controlled areas, reported that at least four people died and six others were infected by yellow fever in the areas.

Jaro stated that jaundice and nasal and mouth bleeding are the most common diseases among the people in South Kordofan’s Nuba Mountains.

He accused the international community of failing to help the aggrieved people in South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur states.

Meanwhile, a medical team from the Sudan’s federal Health Ministry has reportedly launched a vaccination campaign against yellow fever, targeting more than 9,000 people in West Kordofan and the government-controlled areas in South Kordofan.

According to medical reports, about 16 people died of yellow fever and 18 others were infected in 12 localities of the Kordofan states. The infection rate indicates that 80 per cent are male ranging between 15-45 years old.
