Unknown gunmen killed at least three travelers on the Yei-Juba road on Wednesday, with an unconfimed number of people robbed in separate incidents.

A source who traveled to Yei yesterday said that three people were killed along the road between Lainya and Juba. He described the incident as an ambush, saying the victims were using public means. Central Equatoria police have tasked a patrol vehicle to accompany buses on the route, he said.

Another source who traveled from Yei to Juba yesterday said he did not see the three victims but he was with a group of travelers who were briefed by police along the road, telling them that three people had been killed.

According to a third source, the victims may have been targeted for their ethnicity.

Yei is one of the main towns in Central Equatoria State, located southwest of Juba in the direction of Uganda or Congo.
