Government investigation into Maban incident begins

An investigation committee formed by the national government in Juba has started questioning state government officials, aid agencies, chiefs and representatives of youth and women in Maban County.

This comes after recent attack on aid workers and facilities in Bunj by local youth. The violence started as a peaceful protest at what is perceived as a lack of employment opportunities but quickly became violent and led to the attacks and looting and burning of humanitarian premises and damage to humanitarian vehicles.

The investigation committee led by deputy minister of interior Riaw Gatlier Gai arrived in the town of Bunj on Friday and started its meetings with several stakeholders.

The committee toured the facilities attacked by the local youth on 23 July and visited suspected individuals being detained by the police in the area.
