Eight men were killed on Friday at Giyada army base in Juba, not three as earlier reported. Four Ugandan laborers were also killed accidentally in the incident, Radio Tamazuj has learnt. 

Two days earlier on Wednesday dozens were killed at the army base just south of Juba University in gunfights sparked by a salary dispute. Shootings there on Friday were briefer and involved fewer troops.

The incident on Friday is said to have started at about 2:20 p.m. inside Giyada when a reportedly drunk soldier opened fire on three other colleagues from another ethnicity who were walking beside him, killing them.

The perpetrator ran to the north outside Giyada, pursued by other soldiers. He entered into a container near the fuel station in Jebel market, exchanging fire

Soldiers pursuing the suspected killer opened fire on the container. It was afterwards discovered that four Ugandan men had been hiding inside the container since the shooting started nearby at Giyada.

The Ugandan men who fell victim to the crossfire had been working as brickmakers in the commercial area around the base.

Since this incident the army appears to have begun a crackdown on indiscipline, sending six to eight troop cars to collect drunken soldiers from bars in Souq Sitta back to Giyada. Also the army spokesman disclosed a new initiative would be announced soon to battle “indiscipline that is causing insecurity in Juba.”
