Fugitive arrested after shootout in Kwajok town

Warrap security forces have arrested one of their colleagues for embezzling money from the state prison department.

Valentino Akol Akuc was arrested on Thursday and charged with stealing 56,000 SSP from the Warrap prison department, according to Warrap State Security Adviser James Achi Akuen.

This is the third time Akol has faced charges for the crime.

Akuen said Akol had already been tried by a prison court and ordered to pay back the money, but he refused.

Akol was summoned for second time, this time to the state high court. While in court, Akol was found to have grenade in his pocket. The court asked him to pay back the money but he again refused.

On Thursday evening, Special Forces were sent to arrest Akol. When they arrived, Akol started shooting at them, wounding three soldiers.

“Akol was also shot at the leg and he was collected back to the prison where he will be treated inside the prison,” Akuen said.

In an unrelated incident, a mentally unstable man died after setting himself on fire while in the custody of the Warrap Criminal Investigation Department. He was being held by the CID for "beating people anyhow," Akeun said.
